When first starting college, many people skip over working out and keeping themselves healthy. But keeping yourself in tip-top shape is extremely important, though staying active can be an uphill battle sometimes (pun intended). Today, I have a few tips and gadgets to put the Fun back in Fun-cercise, which is a new word I’m inventing today. Just because it’s something you probably should do doesn’t mean working out can’t be the most fun activity ever!
Don’t be Afraid to Change it Up!
We’ve all been there: sitting at an exercise bike watching the latest episode of Scandal, just waiting for the next thirty minutes to be over so you can go back to eating junk food. Um, no thank you! If one activity is getting boring or isn’t working out for you (your body can totally become stagnant!), then do something different! Go take a class with other people or try working out in the park! Don’t let yourself get bored with your workout or you’ll find yourself empty-handed at the end of the month.
Make it a Party!
Like most things, working out can be way more fun when you have a friend by your side. I like working out with my friends because we’ll groan out enthusiastically (or complainingly) during crunches, which makes us laugh and work harder. Besides, if you’re hanging out with friends during a work out, you don’t have to sacrifice quality time later!
No, I don’t mean with an extra piece of cheesecake. Getting yourself some new work out gear can really help pump it up! Treat yourself to a cute new work out tank top or fancy pair of tennis shoes! Besides, you should be working out in the right gear to keep yourself healthy and safe, which means you should get that cute new pair of workout pants. If it’s a bit too tempting to spend all that money, make it a reward for yourself after a week or month or however long you need of sticking to your workouts.
Go Go Gadget!
I can personally speak on behalf of the Fitbit brigade since I recently invested in one! I cancelled my bus pass because less money towards a bus means it can go towards paying for a cool new device! (and more walking opportunities) I can honestly say that it was one of the best investments I’ve made for myself and my personal health. I have a Fitbit flex, which is a bracelet that lights up and vibrates for various goals throughout the day. It’s fun to challenge my friends and battle to get the most steps in one day. However, if you’re not into cranking out dough for a fancy device, download one of the millions of phone apps through the App Store or Google Play, it can make a world of a difference! Programs like Map My Run, Nike Training Club, and MyFitnessPal are perfect for work out motivation as well as tracking!
Pump Up the Jams.
I don’t know about you, but when I hear my favorite songs, I can’t help but dance a little! (basically any of Little Mix’s upbeat singles) Getting yourself a stellar playlist is a surefire way to turn your workout into a real party! If you don’t want to make one yourself, there are tons of playlists on Spotify, Pandora, 8 Tracks, you name it! Check out The Strong Movement’s playlist of the month for some great gym tunes. Maybe even try matching your rhythm to the RPM of the music, if you want to get extra work out brownie points!
Do it for YOU.
When it comes down to it, remind yourself why it is you’re working out. Ideally, it shouldn’t be a chore that you have to get done, it should make you feel good and powerful, which makes you want to work out even more later! Finding that motivation again is one of the best things you can do to make work outs fun. Good luck and I’ll see you all at the gym!
